Michael Whitesides is one of my best local customers. I didn't know him until about two years ago when he started his
discus venture. I felt very proud when I was invited into his home to see his aquariums. Over the past 20 years,
I have been attending international aquatic trade shows, visiting many excellent aquarium stores, but Michael Whitesides has
the best discus aquarium I have ever seen.
I hope Michael can tell us some of his secrets on his achievement of keeping the discus and plants so
healthy together. He said all the discus, except one, were purchased from me. I couldn't even recognize them because
he raised most of the discus from 2.5" to 6"-7.5".

Subject: I found my progress report on discus and plant integration
From: "Michael Whitesides" Date: Thu, December 19, 2002 9:51 pm
Tony, I was very honored by your recent visit to my home to photograph my two aquariums and
the plant and animal life contained therein. I have admired discus fish and been fascinated by them since first seeing
them in the early 70's. But I have seldom seen them displayed in anything but sterile looking aquatic environments.
Their need for clean water is often thought to be incompatible with the requirements of living plants in a meticulously groomed
planted aquarium. So, my interest is to attempt to keep and display beautiful discus fish amid watery surroundings where
rare and interesting living plants flourish. Some time ago I was told that this is possible.
I have a 55 gallon tank that has been successfully supporting healthy plants for the past two years of its sixteen year history.
The big change that occurred two years ago was that I become aware of the availability of high intensity power compact lighting
and carbon dioxide fertilization. I purchased a light fixture capable of supplying about four watts of power per gallon
of water and a carbon dioxide regulator and diffuser unit to stimulate photosynthesis during the timer-controlled lighting
interval. I lined the bottom of the tank with iron-rich Flourite substrate and added water. Hetch Hetchy water
is good for fresh water aquariums but it is somewhat alkaline. I adjust the pH to slightly acidic. An Eheim thermofilter
removes the nitrogenous wastes and stabilizes the temperature at about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Plants also appreciate
clean water, so I plumbed the filtration system to include a cutoff valve and garden hose connection that facilitates easy
removal of one-third to one-half of the water for the weekly water change. I mix new 80 degree water with chlorine remover,
hardness elevators and liquid fertilizer in a 55 gallon plastic barrel. A sump pump and garden hose are used to inject
new water into the filtration system. A simple water change can be completed in about one-half hour but plant grooming
and algae suppression can add an additional 90 minutes to the procedure. Usually, two simple and two comprehensive water
changes are required each month for proper maintenance. My 55 gallon setup supported live plants
very nicely so I decided to introduce some discus fish and see what would happen. The discus adjusted quickly and spawned
frequently. Unfortunately, as soon as the fry would develop the ability to swim away from their parents, they would
be gobbled up by the Mr. Discus Cardinal Tetras that share the aquarium. I am careful to keep this tank as clean as
possible which means that I cannot feed heavily. I only put red mosquito larvae and Tetramin flakes into the tank. No
beef heart and shrimp is given. Therefore, I don't expect the discus to achieve a large size. They seem healthy
and happy and the aquarium is very pleasant to gaze upon. I also have a 180 gallon tank that I
am trying to develop for discus and live plants. It has 576 watts of power compact lighting and carbon dioxide fertilization.
Filtration is accomplished using a wet/dry sump. In a year's time, I have added many baby discus and some adult discus
from Sunrise Tropicals. They were always healthy and colorful fish from the start. They seemed to eat better when
I maintained the water temperature at 86 degrees. This is too hot for most live plants and they became stressed.
Then the algae took over and my aquarium has become unsightly. I gave up on the plants and reduced the light interval to six
hours to help suppress algae growth. I wanted the discus to reach a large size so I fed them heavily on beef heart and
shrimp as well as red mosquito larvae and fresh water shrimps. I change 55 gallons of water every five days, or so. The
discus are doing well but the plants are failing. My goal is to be able to call you and say that my 180 gallon tank
has such beautiful discus and such beautiful plants that you will have to search far and wide to find a more beautiful freshwater
aquarium.

especially grew; it is now at least 8.5". Below are the photos I took on my recent visit.
